Volunteer’s Tasks
Main role : to assist the Market Gardener to develop all aspects of our glasshouses, field crops and orchards to our organically certified market garden supplying the community with fresh produce as well as providing a safe environment for adults with learning difficulties to engage in gardening activities.

Main tasks include the following :
– all year preparation – growing beds
– seasonal planting, weeding and harvesting
– outdoor working in all weathers
– apple/fruit bush pruning
– apple juice making
– seed to plate – journey of food preparation
– involvement in maintaining and supplying seasonal garden produce to the wider Glencraig Community
– other tasks, depending on the needs of the organisation and the interest of the volunteer

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
EVS in Camphill Community Glencraig is coordinated by Bryson Charitable Group and the EVS volunteer will live in shared accommodation in Belfast with Bryson EVS volunteers based in other projects. The volunteers each have their own bedroom and share kitchen, living space and bathroom. The houses are in South and East Belfast which are less than 10 miles away from the workplace.
The volunteer will receive a weekly allowance to cover food and volunteer allowance.
The volunteer will travel between accommodation and the project by local transport, costs will be met by the project.

Training during the opportunity
The volunteer will receive a two day induction and orientation training on arrival in Belfast, before going to Camphill Community.
There will be training in relevant policies and procedures in the project, including health and safety and supporting people with learning disabilities.
There may be the possibility for the volunteer to attend other relevant training during the EVS placement.

Volunteer profile
The volunteer should have an interest in organic & biodynamic horticulture and should be physically fit – the volunteer’s role will be in the “Market Garden” which is horticultural in nature.
The volunteer should also have an interest in people with learning disabilities and should have the following qualities

• Creative, with ability to think on your feet and adapt to the environment you’re in
• Friendly, approachable & warm
• Patient, supportive & respectful
• Responsible, positive, enthusiastic attitude

Camphill Community Glencraig was established in 1954 to provide a unique approach to supporting children, young people and adults with learning disabilities. Over the years Glencraig Community has developed a reputation for providing a special holistic approach which enables everyone to reach their full potential and live a happy and meaningful life. Glencraig prides itself on the high standards of care, support and education provided in a nurturing environment.
Camphill Community Glencraig is based at Craigavad on the south shore of Belfast Lough, between Holywood and Bangor. It was the first Camphill Community established in Northern Ireland. Over the years the original School has been joined by a Training College for young people up to the age of 19 each providing curative education based upon the teachings of Rudolf Steiner and the Waldorf Curriculum, Dr König and complying with the Northern Ireland Curriculum. There has also been the development of the adult community and all the workshop areas where they can be involved including the biodynamic farm and garden and various craft and services workshops.
